Frequently asked questions
What is Zulu time?
Zulu time is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the time at 0° longitude with no daylight saving. The military, aviation and weather services use it so everyone works from one clock. "Zulu" is the phonetic name for the letter Z, which marks the zero-offset zone.
Is Zulu time the same as GMT?
For everyday use, yes: UTC and GMT show the same time. UTC is the precise scientific standard. Note that the UK switches to BST (UTC+1) in summer, while Zulu time never changes.
How do I convert Zulu time to Eastern time?
Subtract 5 hours during Eastern Standard Time (early November to mid-March) and 4 hours during daylight time. 1800Z is 1300 EST or 1400 EDT.
Does Zulu time change for daylight saving?
No. Zulu time is the same all year, which is one reason pilots and the military use it.
