How we calculate

Conversions

Military time is the 24-hour clock written without a colon. 0000–0059 is the 12 AM hour, 0100–1159 is AM, 1200–1259 is the 12 PM hour and 1300–2359 is PM (subtract 12). The converter accepts 1730, 17:30, 5:30 pm, 5pm, noon, midnight and 2400 (read as midnight, 0000). Our conversion code is covered by automated tests for every edge case above.

Current time and time zone

The current time comes from your device clock, shown in your device’s time zone using your browser’s built-in time zone database, so daylight saving time is applied automatically. If your device clock is wrong, the time shown will be too.

Sunrise, sunset and the sky

The sky colors and the sun’s path follow today’s sunrise and sunset for your approximate location, estimated by our host (Cloudflare) from your IP address, or from your time zone if that isn’t available. Sunrise and sunset use the NOAA solar position equations (accurate to a minute or two for a known location; less exact when only the time zone is known). The moon is drawn in today’s phase, calculated from the average lunar cycle (29.53 days), and crosses the sky from sunset to sunrise as a design element.

Military time zones

Letters follow the NATO/U.S. military convention: Z (Zulu) is UTC, A–M (skipping J) are UTC+1 to +12, N–Y are UTC−1 to −12, and J (Juliet) means local time.
